about

First EP for the indie rock band The Shakes. There were a few demo MPs bashing around before this, but they're lost them to the mists of time.

Miscellaneous facts about this recording:

We mixed drums, bass and bed guitars with a four-track as we were going, then digitally added stuff. The mix is subsequently a bit erratic! That's okay though.

At this point we were practicing in Braden's dad's basement in the scenic Adelaide hills. I liked it as a practice spot but we would always crack our heads on a low-slung girder. Since then I have always thought the name BONK! would be a great, poppy name for maybe a nightclub or a venue. Not so much in the pandemic times of 2020, though.

The song 'Cinema' very blatantly rips off Interpol. I love them but this is way across the line.

During our practices in this basement, Cale once dropped a hot chip down my buttcrack while I was bending over. This is not something I have forgotten or forgiven.

This was my first real experience singing on a release for an actual band and I wanted it to sound like Jay Reatard at first. Obviously it did not get there.

Our first show was at Animal House with the UV Race. This was maybe the first AH show too. Afterwards I was baffled when I got told we sounded like Radiohead, but I thought we did okay despite this.
